Let us take a look at nine common digital skills that a child needs to possess to navigate through their daily curricular work:

1. Intuitive understanding of hardware

Our increasing dependence on smart devices such as laptops, tablets, smartphones and AI-powered speakers in classrooms makes it imperative for students to learn the basics of the hardware.

They should also know the basic troubleshooting processes in case of minor functionality errors. This may also include knowledge of networks, processors and so on.

2. Understanding of terminology related to digital tools and platforms

Students must understand the technical language used for various digital tools and platforms so that they can navigate through them easily.

For instance, they must be aware of terms such as HTML, domain, web server and URL to understand how various websites function.

Such an understanding of technology can help learners use apps, information tools and websites with ease.

While the vastness of the Internet can practically bring the world within the fingertips of a learner, its staggering expanse can also confuse them if they do not know how to do a precise search.

Furthermore, the Internet has a whole lot of unnecessary things that can distract the hinder their academic exploration.

Therefore, students should learn to judiciously sift through the wide array of resources that the Internet provides to find the appropriate learning material.

4. Content creation on various platforms

Several content creation tools are available for the different kinds of assignments that students need to work on.

They can create documents, spreadsheets, PPTs, infographics, audios and videos as per requirement.

For this, students need to be adept at collecting pertinent data and be fluent with the content creating platforms to present the information in the desired way.

5. Effective communication and collaborative skills

While 21st-century communication has evolved to a far less formal version than it was in the previous centuries, especially with social media, it is nonetheless important to know how to communicate effectively on various platforms.

Students should learn to communicate confidently and with precision so that their intent is crystal clear.

Good communication skills and team spirit gives rise to efficient collaborative skills. It leads to building trust among peers and effective peer learning due to the variety of skills, passions and knowledge possessed by different people in a group.

This is also important for future workplace where project management requires the evolution of these skills.

6. Social media skills

Social media has brought forth a revolution in education by providing scope for a wide range of communication and interaction among peers.

It is helping students share their ideas and creations with millions of experts in the field, who are capable of giving effective feedback, thus enhancing learning.

It furthers students’ networking skills, which can help them in collaborative efforts as well. Additionally, the knowledge of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) can help them increase the visibility of their posts/blogs, which can result in increased engagement with peers.
